Viral marketing is presenting an idea that quickly grabs the viewers attention; and sparking a common interest among a large community of people in a virus like manner, hence the term “viral”. Social media enables this phenomenon we call “going viral”, by creating the ease of “likes”, “shares”, and re-tweeting, making it vastly quick & easy to share information across globe. Whether your supporting a cause or creating awareness for your brand, its important to keep your message engaging, informative, and entertaining. The power of film is commonly utilized by such video sharing sites such as YouTube, in order to deliver powerful messages and influence audiences to share those messages with their entire social network.

So how can businesses take advantage of this viral phenomenon? An example of a video gone viral is IKEA’s: Herding Cats Video.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Since its upload in September 2010, the video has garnered well over 3 million hits. Yes, the production took 5 film crews and probably more resources then the average small-medium sized business have to spare; but with a little imagination- one could accomplish a similar effect using little resources. Other than video marketing, other viral marketing strategies exist which are propelled by social media to maximize sharing capabilities.

Other viral marketing types include:

REFERRAL CONTESTS

Referral contests are perhaps a little ‘old-school’, but they are still extremely effective. People are often much more inclined to refer another person to a site/ business if there is ‘something in it’ for them. Such a contest may, for example, promise a smaller prize for a minimum amount of referrals and a higher price for the highest number of referrals within a specific time period.

REFERRAL PROGRAMS BASED ON TARGETS

A referral program based on preset targets, on the other hand, would promise consumers a regular, perhaps monthly reward when the required number of referrals is reached. Some companies use sure-win referral schemes, where consumers are offered a set payment for every referral they make. A business may, for instance, offer customers a payment of a few cents for every e-mail referring an acquaintance they send out, regardless of whether the referred individual ultimately makes a purchase or not.

FREE SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS

Offering free use of specific services or applications is another one of the great viral marketing ideas. Consumers love to be able to use free services and are highly likely to pass on the knowledge of where a useful free application can be found. This idea effectively assists a company in establishing their branding, as visitors coming to check out the free application are taking note of and further sharing the site on which they have found it. Google’s many free to use applications are a good example of this.

A CAUSE OR NON-PROFIT

A marketing campaign built on a worthwhile cause triggers the ethics in all of us. As individuals we all have a need to be part of something bigger than ourselves. A great example of supporting a cause and creating a video that engages the masses, is the viral phenomenon known as KONY 2012. Although since its viral explosion, there has been a number of undermining distractions, their is no doubt of its profound effectiveness to have initiated a mass global movement.

Click here to view the embedded video.

As with any great marketing campaign, viral marketing projects have to be well researched. When planning your campaign, one should investigate a target population’s demographics and create a highly tailored marketing campaign that engages and inspires your audience to share with their community.

There’s an old saying: “nothing is free”; and in the case of Stussy’s latest Facebook campaign, the contemporary clothing line is taking that meaning to whole new level. The Stussy Amsterdam page are enticing fans to “like” their page; and what they’re offering in return is quite risque.

In an effort to debut the Men’s 2012 Summer/Spring line, Stussy-Amsterdam’s latest Facebook campaign is showcasing a model wearing layers upon layers of clothing; and vows to strip for every ”like” the Dutch Stussy page receives. The strategy is fairly simple and straightforward; and is causing a bit of a stir.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Smart? Or just plain trashy? We’ll let you be the judge by voting at the bottom of the page. Since its launch in early April, the campaign has gotten both positive and negative feedback:

” Stussy is finally using the Facebook feature in an original way, says Amsterdam Ad Blog. Better yet, it hooks consumers. After liking the stripper once, users will come back multiple times to check on her stage of undress. In doing so, they’ll see a multitude of Stussy clothes”.

While opposing opinions like Patricia Robles at Econsultancy, questions the brand positioning of Stussy-Amsterdam’s campaign. Given that Stussy carries both men’s and women’s apparel, some suggest it would have been wiser to have launched this particular campaign with a male and female model together.

Whether your for or against the campaign, Stussy’s Dutch Facebook has succeeded in respect of garnering attention; and has since gone viral.

PLANNING YOUR CAMPAIGN

This doesn’t mean you have to necessarily strip down to your undies; but here are some initial steps to take when planning your own marketing campaign.

Like any campaign, you start with outlining as much information as possible. Look to cover all your bases and take into account answering the 5 W’s & H method (who, what, where, when, and why). Here’s a start:

STEP 1) Understand Your Market

Know who your target market are and go where they go.

“As a contemporary brand you need to be wherever your fans live, shop or play. Facebook plays an integral part of their lives, Stussy AMS’ Facebook is therefore an important platform to engage with fans, inform them or just share the fun”, said Sean Thompson/ Head of Creativity, Arnold Amsterdam.

STEP 2) Determine Your Objectives

Are you looking to create a buzz and go viral? Or to complete some other marketing objective? An effective marketing campaign often contain a collage of activities working together for a common goal.

STEP 3) What’s Your Channel?

Outline all the available marketing channels that fall into your budget; such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Press release, influential bloggers. Its important to know where your customers are.

STEP 4) Whats All the Buzz About?

Your campaign should be bold, unique, and most importantly engaging. How could you engage with your market?

As consumers we are:

Visual – Seeing is believing; and depending on what feelings you are trying to convey, a picture can bring it all together.

We look for patterns – As patterns are reassuring, because we have a level of control.

We like beginnings and ends – This can be exemplified by deadlines or “limited time”. Giving a time frame gives consumers a sense of urgency; and as we condition ourselves to prioritize, your conditioning your consumers to do the same.

We respond to emotion – This usually can be related to your “story”. How much are your viewers relating to your story or what emotions is your story creating?

We like stories – As kids, we are often read to. And as adults we still love a good story, cause, or purpose. How engaging your story or cause will dictate whether your able to entice your audience to take action.

When you have these steps thoroughly mapped out – You are ready to take action!

Businesses are more and more looking to alternative marketing for getting their message out. Although traditional marketing campaigns, such as print, B2B, and Internet strategies, are still going strong, creative entrepreneurs are discovering newer and cheaper ways to get their products and services in front of consumers eyes.

Electronic media is prolific and expanding exponentially. Email blasts, and spamming, continues to take the Web by storm, literally, as evidenced by the dozens or hundreds of unsolicited messages found in your spam folder each day. Yet, they are surprisingly effective due to their repetitive nature, like subconscious brainwashing!

Social networking is booming, with many large-scale or innovative enterprises setting up Facebook or similar accounts, and administrators signing up at professional websites like LinkedIn where they can casually discuss their business while making social contacts and networking across their industries. Tweeting, blogging, and even texting promotions are growing quickly; but alternative marketing extends beyond the web.

In many industries, actors are used to represent a brand or even an employee, member, or satisfied customer. The Statue of Liberty for Liberty Taxes is becoming renowned in cities where the franchises place a costumed figure on street corners to catch the attention of drivers at busy intersections. Companies such as Oculu, an online video platform, will provide the actors, and even will write the script for your site.

Print Media is a traditional form of marketing; and provide a mind numbing number of options to advertise in. In fact when owning a business such as a restaurant or bar, you are constantly being pitched on why their publication can benefit you most. Other forms of print advertising that are more “alternative” include pens, matches, grocery bags, erasers, chopsticks, fliers, calendars, stickers and posters which are usually associated with guerrilla marketing. The trick is to have the product be a useful item which will more likely to be viewed over and over. Giving yourself opportunities to Distributing promo items to the masses at trade shows, networking events, and large networking events, will boost the effect quickly and efficiently.

Companies that specialize in certain services, like tutoring, may hand out free kids’ books or colored chalk to advertise their services. Hair salons or spas may have brushes, combs, or manicure kits imprinted with their shop’s logo and contact information.

Alternative marketing can go beyond simple gifts or promotional distributions. Some entrepreneurs, like a masseuse, for example, offer free samples of their wares. Volunteer services and demonstrations, or even brief training sessions help to make the public aware of a new or growing business while generating good will. Giving a talk to local schools or civic groups, donating a free product to charity, or presenting a demonstration about some aspect of your company business are all tried and proven ways to get the public to take notice.

Contests and competitions are more ways to attract public awareness, especially with prizes or free giveaways to the winners.

Self-publishing an ebook or POD (print on demand) books present a professional “calling card” when going on the speaking circuit. Not only are books an additional revenue stream, but they also promote your business and represent you as an established expert.

As you contemplate growing your business through alternative marketing strategies, look for ways to push the envelope without alienating potential customers. People are always interested in new ways of doing things, so with a little ingenuity and creativity, your business will become the latest buzz that everyone is talking about.

Alternative marketing offers creative ways to attract buyers without appearing too obvious or paying high prices for sales publicity. While alternate marketing techniques can catch the attention of prospective shoppers for an immediate response, they can also help you collect emails to start a client database with contact information for future promotions.

.

1. Add a sign-in or registration link at your website. This will encourage visitors to enter their email addresses while shopping at your site. A log-in feature also conveys the idea of privacy, which many shoppers will appreciate.

`

2. Host interactive website features. Surveys, questionnaires, comments, reviews, and discussions are some of the many ways you can entice visitors to sign in and get involved with others at your website. By targeting your features to specific demographic groups – for example, kitchen wares to wives and mothers between the ages of 20 and 40 – many are likely to join discussion forums for tips on how to use the products sold at your site. Broader topics, like managing preschool children with cooking, will allow women to exchange ideas and support each other, which can help to establish your website as the go-to place for kitchen gadgets and girlfriend chat.

`

3. Sponsor competitive events. Contests to name a new kitchen item, write the best customer appreciation letter, or suggest new gadgets to be available for sale can get visitors involved and engaged. Rewards in the form of discounts, free gifts, or featured photo and letter may attract numerous participants. If you sell bakeware, consider a contest for the most ingenious recipe using one of your products, and then publicize the winner through local media like newspaper or radio. Registrants will naturally use email addresses.

4. Bring in guest speakers/ demonstrations. Have a sign-in sheet for guests, which will include a request for their email addresses.

5. Monthly drawings for those who leave business cards or for submitted email addresses. The name drawn each month will win a free lunch at a nearby restaurant or some other prize; meanwhile, you will have collected an abundant supply of email addresses.

6. Publish a free online newsletter. This could be a blog at your website or an e-newsletter delivered to subscribers’ email addresses. Either way, guests will need to register for it by using their email addresses. The short blog post or newsletter can include helpful tips on using your merchandise or general suggestions that subscribers will find helpful.

Providing free, competitive, or insightful information to your target market will get their attention and their email addresses for future contacts. Start now, and you could have hundreds within a short time!

While the majority of marketing we see is on television, print advertising, billboards, or any of the other ‘traditional’ forms of marketing, non-traditional marketing is fast becoming the new norm. Here are six non-traditional marketing ideas for your small to medium sized business.

Email – One of the more traditional of the non-traditional marketing ideas is to send out your marketing via an email campaign. Of course have people sign up and sign in to get your email marketing. If you just rip off random email address or don’t clearly state your intentions with an email marketing campaign you could turn people off to your business altogether.

Social Sites – Another great venue for non-traditional marketing is through the use of social media. Set up a Facebook page, Google+ page, Twitter account and LinkedIn page and get your connections to be your biggest trumpeters. Conversion of your connections into real customers by allowing for them to enjoy special insider-only offers, take polls, offer advice, and get money directly to you from business created.

Blogging – Many people see blogging as a way to get an ‘insiders-look’ into your business; seeing what goes on behind the scenes. If you incite discussions you can really connect with your customers. If you’re going to begin blogging though you should be sure to do it regularly, at least three times a week and continue to do so. Consistency is key and can earn your wise voice sales.

YouTube – A great way to show off your product or service is through the implementation of YouTube. Posting your own videos you can really impact your customers opinions of your business and again show them things which they can then share with their friends. You increase your “expert” position, convince people to become loyal customers, and increase your bottom line.

Big Events – If you’re trying to get the word out about your business locally one good way is to do more of a non-traditional event in a high traffic area. Don’t just give out key chains, tumblers, bumper stickers or food-stuff related back to your business; get people talking by your presentation or delivery of these things. Give people a nibble and they’ll come roaring back for more.

Flash Mob – One of the more recent non-traditional marketing events would be the flash mob. You’d have to have enough people in an area where it would be noticed. Of course you should video tape your flash mob event, post it on YouTube and send links to local newscasters. This can get people talking in an engaged way about whatever your flash mob has done and will get people spending money on your product.

Even if you think that there is no way any of these ideas will ever take hold, the great thing about the Internet is that there is room for everyone. Just because one companies Facebook page is brewing over or one products YouTube video has gone viral doesn’t mean yours can’t be next. Even with the physical events, your presence can still stand out. Anyway the idea with non-traditional marketing isn’t even necessarily to ‘go viral.’ You’re looking for loyal customers who can love your product or service, remain loyal, and convert their friends of their own volition.

Marketing is one of the most vital aspects of any business and it is extra-important for small businesses because they have limited resources to popularize their venture. One good option that is gaining popularity in the recent years is alternative marketing. In simplest terms, alternative marketing is a direct form of communication between a customer and the company’s brand of products through a variety of media, both conventional and unconventional. It encompasses originality and uniqueness using the latest technology like Internet, mobile applications, interactive techniques and social media. This helps the company to build a personal and lasting relationship with its customers.

Why choose alternative marketing?

Since traditional marketing avenues such as television, radio and newspapers are becoming ineffective because of the sheer number of advertisements that viewers are bombarded with everyday, its important that small business owners look at alternative marketing as an option for their advertising.

Traditional marketing techniques may not help the business to reach out to the target audience because more and more customers are resorting to blogs, Internet and social media for their information. All these factors have necessitated the growth of this form of marketing that can help a small business owner to effectively reach out to the target audience within an affordable budget.

Techniques

As an entrepreneur, its important your understand your target audience and their expectations from your product or service. One way to engage with them is through social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter as these sites are a platform to build personal relations with your customers. You can also request short surveys about your product online or in retail stores that are in the same line of business as you. This information is important to come up with the most effective marketing strategy to best attract customers for your products.

Word of mouth – Once you understand the expectations of your potential customers, its time to formulate your marketing strategies. One of the most successful method is word of mouth. This helps your existing customers to spread word about your product to potential customers. In fact, this is one of the strategies used by most small businesses to attract mass crowd during the initial phases. This is an inexpensive and yet a powerful tool. A 2001 McKinsey report states that more than 54% of sales in the small business segment happen through word of mouth. However, for this to happen, your existing customers should be satisfied with your product and customer service and this is something that you should work on right from the beginning.

Buzz – Another technique is buzz. There are people out there who would love to talk about your product to everyone he or she knows and this is a great form of advertisement for your business. Seth Godin calls these people “sneezers” and they are the ones who talk about everything – from the funniest shows to the latest gadget to your product. They are “experts” in what they do and getting such people to notice your product can be an effective form of marketing.

Other alternative marketing techniques – Other forms of alternative marketing include message boards, chat rooms, flyers in the local stores and supermarkets, brochures and even printing messages on everyday staples such as milk cartons.

These are inexpensive and yet, an effective word to spread word about your business to potential customers.
