Need to get over that financing hurdle? Facebook, Twitter, and just about everything online, is re-shaping the way we interact with each other – Now crowdfunding presents an exciting new platform for aspiring artists, philanthropists, and start-ups to finance their projects. The ever-growing social media landscape is the driving force behind crowdfunding’s ability to generate finances to start and grow your business. Micro-lending and peer-to-peer lending were the earliest examples of “social financing”.

What is Crowdfunding?

Crowd funding is a platform which allows regular people to display their ideas by using the power of social media and video outlets such as Youtube to pitch their projects to a large pool of micro-investors. Where a substantial investor would have been needed in the past, crowd funding makes it possible for individuals to leverage the masses to reach their investment goals. Whether you garner enough support or not, depends on your approach.

The real power of crowdfunding lies in the ability to expose large groups of investors to to new creative projects, ventures and/or business opportunities. Writers, independent film makers and entrepreneurs looking for seed money can take advantage of crowdfunding to get their business off the ground and/or to revive an existing business. Crowdfunding is also becoming an effective way to finance non-profit enterprises.

CAMPAIGN TIPS:

Tip 1: Understand Your Options

Check out as many sites as possible to find one best suited for your project. As listed below, certain sites are geared towards a particular niche or type of campaign. Would you like to raise as much money as possible by a certain date? Or would it be an all or nothing campaign; meaning your investors wouldn’t be charged if the entire campaign goal wasn’t met? Check your options out and decide what is best. Here are some good examples:

Kickstarter – Crowdfunding for creative projects

Crowdtilt – Crowdfunding for ANYTHING

Angellist – A funding site for angel investors

Indiegogo – Similar to Kickstarter, for creative projects

Appbackr – Crowdfunding for apps

Tip 2: Create a Campaign That Attracts Press

Whether it’s your product or an engaging video that goes viral, get creative and outline ways you can attract some press. Once you’ve outlined your campaign, leverage the power of social media to garner support for your project. See our post on “Going Viral”

Tip 3: Engage With the Community

Be sure to provide regular updates, answer any questions, and ask questions. Engaging and showing progress will ensure them that they made the right choice by supporting your cause and may prompt them to give positive “word of mouth”.marketing.

Tip 4: Promote Like No Tomorrow

People like stories; so tell a great one. Media outlets are hungry for news and your press release can add more fans and drive people to your campaign site. Tweet about it, write blog posts about it and add a signature line to all your emails with a link to your project. This not only gets you seen by people, but also builds back-links for search engine results.

Tip 5: Don’t ask for charity; What’s in it for them?

Realize the difference between a well thought-out; and engaging campaign vs just flat out asking for help. Although people could probably sympathize with your struggling band, remember to offer enticing rewards for investing their hard-earned money. Get creative with your gifts and offers; make your potential investors feel like they’re supporting a movement, rather than just forking over money.

In addition to aggregating funds to financing your project and ideas, your able to engage directly with your target market, tweek your strategies, and learn from your mistakes. Kickstarter was reported to have collected over $40million and funding over 20,000 projects just 2 years after launching in April of 2009.

Small business owners often find themselves looking to established companies as models for marketing and strategy examples. Two things to consider here are: 1) What is your marketing budget? 2) What stage is your business in?

Your business decisions & objectives should be in line with the stage of your business- If your business is just starting off and/or have a limited budget, then you might want to look into more cost effective ways to promote your business.

The following are 9 cost effective tips to alternative marketing:

Utilize New Business Tools - In a world exploding with new ways to grow your business, sites like BizSaves tests out the most innovative and effective business tools out there and makes it easier to try. BizSaves offers a wide range of deals on business tools such as targeted sales leads, text message marketing, web analytics and even an online spokesperson for your site.

Develop Your 20 second speech - Whether in the elevator, or at a networking event, you will need that 15-20 second sales pitch that quickly hooks in your audience; this form of marketing is termed as your elevator pitch. Practicing and perfecting your pitch will result in you being more confident, informative and effective in swaying your audience to action.

Business Cards - Business cards for your business; business cards for your employees. Business cards are fundamental to business, yet people often limit their business to one card; usually for the business, or high ranking positions. If your smart, you’ll utilize your employees as free advertising. Who else better to promote your business, then the people that know your business the most?

Get Active - If you want to be successful in marketing your company, then you need to be active in the clubs and organizations that would be interested in what you do. Join the local chamber of commerce and become active in their functions. If you sell books, then ask to be a library volunteer to help get out among the people in your area that read. Sites such as meetup.com and linked in, are great social outlets that allow individuals to connect with their desired target market.

Build Your Sales Team - Help people…HELP YOU! In other words, build affiliate partnerships with influential players that could drive traffic to your business. For example: If your a restaurant, create relationships with hotel concierges, tour guides, and office managers. If your in the product business, create as many reseller partnerships as possible.

Know Your Competition - Establish who your competitors are; and see what effective marketing they are executing; note any inefficiencies. Do any marketing channels exist which have been untapped within your industry?

Benchmarking Through Social Media - In today’s world, developing your social presence is fundamental. Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin are 3 major players in the social game; each serving a unique purpose. Benchmarking is marketing strategy of identifying industry leaders and undertake such activities that establish you as a direct competitor such as: tweeting, strategic mentions and wall posts. This is particularly effective for start-ups and/or less established brands.

Ask Your Customers - When talking to customers, ask them how they heard about your business. Instead of wasting precious marketing dollars to something that doesn’t produce customers, your able to pin point what is effective and what isn’t. If you have a site, install an after purchase questionnaire. For traditional “brick and mortar” businesses, place comment cards which they could turn in to win a prize.

The Power of “Thank You” - Get into a regular regimen of thanking people. Even more powerful, is the “follow up thank you”. As a business, you might be thanking people on a daily basis; at times wholeheartedly and at other times because it’s protocol. Whether its in person, through email, or a gift, making someone feel appreciated and important will strengthen your business relationship and give you more reasons to thank them in the future.

A challenging part of building a business is establishing your target market. You should view your market as inclusive, not exclusive. Think of your business as a support group. Your customers want to go to a business that understands their specific concerns, needs, and wants. Make sure to look out for any niche market opportunities.
When developing your website, remember that people look to their mobile devices for easy on the go information. This means that your website and online destinations should be mobile-friendly. Don’t launch a mobile marketing campaign that leads consumers to your website that doesn’t work well on mobile devices.

Remember, it takes just a few seconds to visit your website from a smartphone or tablet device. Experts say people are shifting from the computer era in to the mobile device/tablet era; especially in the younger demographics and in some Asian countries. The most interested consumers will visit your website, and your website needs to be ready for that traffic.

Business advice can be like trees in a forest; there’s so many it’s hard to know which ones are important. But consider this: advice you hear repeatedly is probably important, so keep listening, learning and evolving your business by taking cues from other’s. This list of business advice includes some basics and just may help you get through tough times.

1 Have a Plan: And use it. A good rule off thumb is to plan out a whole year in advance: When are you going to offer specials? How much do you hope to clear by certain dates? When do you want to hire? Whatever it is try, follow the habits of many successful people and write it down.

2 Change Your Plan: That’s right, the plan you wrote down six months ago should be used as a guide to measure whether your ideas and predictions worked or not. Change things not working by re-doubling your efforts or perhaps using new strategies.

3 Always Ask Questions and re-evaluate what you’re doing. Don’t sit back while your competition finds new ways to out-compete with you. Scour the Internet for ideas to improve your business; join local business associations and compare notes, trends and strategies with other business people around you. Ask your clients how you’re doing.

4 Always Try to Improve. If you think your business is perfect, you’re making a mistake. At least try new things once in a while to see if your marketing, or your website, office procedures, etc. could be made to work better for you. A deal site (like BizSaves) might make it cheaper to find and try new ideas

5 Trust Your Customers and listen and look for trends in buying or repeat purchases. Abandoned shopping carts, returned items, no referral business or a host of other things are people trying to tell you something. Be aware and change.

6 Be Kind to Strangers: OK, the customer is not always right, but it behooves you to take the high road and never be angry or mean to anyone; you never know who might hear about your outburst.

7 Love Your Clients: Speaking of strangers; remember they are the reason for you being in business; they make your business happen. Cherish them secretly; be gracious publicly, and always try to make their experience with you so rewarding they’ll tell all their friends.

8 Love your Vendors: More people without whom your business would not work. Someday you may need a favor or a special delivery; never overlook the importance of good relations with the vendors you count on.

9 Love Your Employees: OK, promise, this is the last “Love” one. Most employees work harder, stay more committed and produce more with praise and constructive criticism. Sure sometimes you have to straighten someone out and even fire them, but coaxing people to excellence is almost always more effective than threatening them or yelling.

10 Connect With Your Competition: This may sound strange, but reaching out with a phone call or note to a new competitor is a good way to measure the threat they pose and if they have some secret weapon. At the least it will let them know you’re watching them, and you’re confident enough to not be afraid of them.

11 Support Your Community: It never hurts to hug back the community which has given your business a chance. Sponsor a holiday food drive; give a free lecture about your field at the local library; join the local Lions club or business organization. Be visible.

12 Talk Up Your Business: Always have business cards; at gatherings give friendly advice in your field, use email signatures that have links, etc. Don’t overlook the contact that might refer your next big client.

13 Know When to Stop. Don’t talk people to death: you want to quickly inform and tease them about your business, not drone on. It’s always better to leave them wanting more; not wishing you would go away.

14 Volunteer a Class: Teaching a class about running your own small business could be of real use to the community. It can also help cement you into the local landscape.

15 Use Your SBA. Your local Small Business Administration office is full of seasoned business people in your area that are a wealth of helpful information, contacts and resources. Contact them and participate.

16 Stay Positive. Sometimes easier said then done, but studies have shown that optimistic people tend to handle conflict better and make wiser decisions (as well as live longer). If you’re naturally a gloomy person, at least don’t let your clients see it. A smile actually makes you feel better. Any problem can be solved.

17 Don’t Do Everything. Unless you’re a solo violinist, learn to trust people and benefit from their strengths, especially to compliment your weaknesses. Seek out a great accountant, or carpenter or marketing expert to guide you. You can’t be the best at everything. Focus on your core business.

What’s your best advice?

Mark Hess is a marketer specializing in helping small businesses find and use modern, growth enhancing marketing, products and services.

If your new business is just in the start-up phase, undoubtedly you’re already researching the best ways to market your products and/or services. Because the majority of start-ups fail within their first year, it’s painfully obvious you need to somewhat of a “magic key” for getting your product & services visible and favorably placed. But how, on your shoestring start-up budget?. Using what’s commonly referred to as “lean startup” techniques is the answer. Here are some suggestions:1.) Use “Baby Steps” to Initially Test Market .
There’s no silver bullet for marketing that works for every single business, every single time. Therefore, be willing to test the waters via various marketing tools, just long enough to provide enough feedback so you have a good basis for comparison. Using a variety of tactics helps assess how responsive customers are to your messages, as well as their reaction to your services and products. As you identify which techniques are not working, eliminate those and focus your budget & energy upon the marketing channels which pull the best response & profitability. Here are some ideas:

Allocate a small part of your marketing budget to try both online & offline promotions

Experiment with referral programs

“Deal of the Day” sites like Groupon and Social Living

Online small business listings

Google Adwords, Yahoo Search, etc.

Local advertising via social marketing (Facebook, etc.)

Twitter tweeting

Local newspaper ads &/or mailers

Set a specific portion of your budget for each venue, then set a timeline. Some businesses like to give things a trial for a minimum of 2 weeks, others feel they get better overall results after 30 days. Put your focus not just your results, but upon the most viable information you’ve obtained.

2) Pay Attention to Customer Feedback

On your shoestring budget, getting efficient and sufficient interaction with your customers can best be done via outreach you already have in place. Utilizing your social media presence to best advantage can sometimes happen by simply updating your status daily, or posting a special here and there. One of the easiest techniques on Facebook, for example, that many users have found is to simply pose a thought-provoking question to get customer feedback. You can also direct them to your website, blog, and email subscriber base to strengthen your connectivity network and interactivity with them.

Keep track of repeated feedback – it will clearly delineate what works and what doesn’t. Don’t spend a lot of your daily time budget upon this, but updating social media outlets for about 20 to 30 minutes a day can afford you great returns in helping you tailor your paid marketing channels. It’s worthwhile!

3) Become a Known Entity in Your Local Community
Communities LOVE businesses that show an interest in their local activities. Consider sponsoring a youth organization or sports team, creating a charity drive for a local family in need, donating to local charities and causes and posting your participation in your business place, on your website, etc.

4) Blog, Baby, Blog
Blogs are free, except for the time spent writing them; but they’ve proven to be an amazing way to keep and attract customers. Offer valuable information that is regularly expanded; this keeps readers coming back, and your SEO results increasing. Well-crafted blogs need to be organically structured to evolve over the long-term.

5) Video Killed the Radio Star….
It’s true that the advent of YouTube and various other viral video outlets has made that hyper-popular outlet affordable and potentially a huge money-maker. Clever use of humor is one of the most ingenious methods to get your message across in under 3 minutes. And it’s FREE!

All services provided at SBDCs are free & confidential

Some low cost training options are available

Anybody who wants to start a small business for the first time, or wishes to improve/expand an existing small business who can’t afford to hire a private consultant can obtain assistance from and SBDC

Small Business Development Centers are separate from the Small Business Administration, and do obtain a portion of their funding from the SBA

Value of Small Business Development Centers
SBDCs conduct economic development related market research, so they are able to offer current, viable advice to business owners. All meetings with an SBDC consultant is by appointment only.

If you are beginning a start-up, it’s highly recommended you attend one of their pre-business planning classes before booking an appointment with a consultant. They also suggest you complete the Business Development Questionnaire prior to that first meeting, so your consultant will have the best understanding of your business plan and can advise you accordingly. If you already are in business, go ahead and book your consultation. They can help you with business growing pains, expanding your marketing and planning for the future.

Here are some key points as to how the SBDC can help your business:

Business Planning

Marketing Analysis

Loan Proposals

Recordkeeping

Procurement

Website Critique

Mystery Shopping

Types of Classes Offered
Small Business Development Centers offer a wide variety of training programs and classes to help inform and educate business owners at all stages of business development. Some classes have a fee attached, but what you can learn is often quite amazing and well worth the relatively small cost. SBDCs can also advise those ready to expand into international markets on the best ways to begin doing so.

Qualifications of SBDC Consultants
Consultants must have a Master’s degree in Business, or a related field, in addition to considerable business experience. And again, all discussions and consultations are completely confidential.

Working with your local SBDC is an excellent no or low-cost way to advance your business. They can answer many of your questions, and help you develop a game plan that works for you.

It’s been said all roads lead to Rome, but when it comes to the best way to start a business and choosing the route to going from “wantrepreneur” to “entrepreneur,” some roads are definitely more productive than others.Consider this a basic primer that includes highlights which some incredibly successful entrepreneurs have used to advantage when paving their road to riches.

Identify & Plant your Seed of Brilliance
Remember, if you build it, they will buy, buy, buy…. Coming up with a million dollar idea is not all that easy at the beginning stages of wanting to start a business. but with persistence and by implementing effective, proven tools that others have used to success, you can do it, too. So here’s some business advice based upon what others have used to their advantage.

Write it Down & Make It Real – Create a list of ideas which you feel will have enough appeal to create demand (translation: profit in your bank account). Bounce these around your R & D department; if you’re a one-person band, solicit feedback from some of your most brutally honest friends/relatives & see which ideas are most popular. Hone that short list down to a single brilliant concept & apply your best efforts to it. You can always repeat the process for runner-up ideas, but focusing on one idea/product/service at a time is one key to success.

If you’re staring at a blank piece of paper instead of a fleshed-out idea list, there’s still hope. Create a checklist of activities you perform daily, particularly things you do more than once per day. Odds are if you’ve wished there was a way to improve whatever the process/service/product, other people have, too. Think multi-tasking – like whomever first came up with the idea of the hands-free phone so you could drive & literally simultaneously be a wheeler-dealer.

Monitor Amazon’s top-sellers. Once you’ve identified products that are raking in the sales, wrack your brain for a product which would be complimentary or an enhancement to that bestseller. Otter’s cases for iPhones is one such piggyback “stairway to success.” .

Watch social media venues to see what’s selling & being talked about on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. Oftentimes what people complain about gives you a heads-up about the need for a new product or service.

Got the $1 Million Idea, Now Where are Customers?
Now’s the time when your desire to start a business can really can go into overdrive. Pinpoint where you can tap into enough prospective purchasers to make your concept skyrocket. Stay mindful of current trends with similar products/services, and watch how they’re doing. In short, make sure your market is viable – not shrinking.

Facebook ads, Google Trends (for multiple website comparison) & Google Insights (which allows you to check volume patterns, search opinions and much more) can all offer valuable stats to help you track the growth potential of your target market.

If there’s a wildly successful money-maker out there that your million dollar idea can piggyback off of – sweet! Go for it! In other words, think like a mogul. Also, study your competitors – the ones whose businesses are most similar to yours. If they’re generating high numbers of prospective customers, your idea stands more than a fighting chance.

For example, you could go to Crunch Base and use their free service to help determine which successful business’s model has the best template to use as an example and then tweak it to your business. If you’re a statistic geek, you might enjoy creating a Google spreadsheet of your competitors’ key numbers for their businesses. This is not an exact science by any means, but it can give you a good ballpark idea of your business’s potential.

Determining The Value of Your Customer
All right, so you’ve got the elementary components of your Primer to Entrepreneurship lined up. A) Your Million $ Idea ready to go and B) Your Prospective Customer Database from which to pull. Now you’re ready to figure out C, which is how much each customer is worth to you in potential annual income.

When you start a business, all kinds of business advice from everyone from your family on down the line to your grocer seems to run as rampant as wildfire. Only take advice that really resonates with you and let the rest go. Figuring out your “C” will not just help you figure out the likelihood of “B” actually buying your product, it will also assist you with pricing. Here’s a formula for determining “C”:

What’s the base cost of a “widget?” In a nutshell, how much is the average price of purchasing said widget (make sure it’s one comparable to yours) For this formulaic example, let’s say $500 base cost per widget.

Recurring maintenance costs – how much does it cost to maintain the widget annually? Again, for this example, let’s estimate a yearly maintenance cost of $1,000.

Determine the “life expectancy” of the widget – how long will it last, on the average. So the last component of the formula example is that the product/service tends to last 10 years. So your formula goes something like this:

[$500 + $1,000 x 10 = $15,000]

So what this shows you is that the folks who plopped down $500 for the widget to begin with and are willing to spend an average of $84 per month for widget maintenance consider their widget very valuable. $15,000 worth of value, to be precise. So if your idea of a product with which to start a business happens to be an E-book or other informational product which can help them get more mileage out of their widget, find more ways to use it, etc., it stands to reason they would consider a price of $50 for that E-book quite reasonable. This formula simply gives you more to go on when determining a fair yet competitive market price for your service or product.

One more formula will help even further – that’s the TAM formula (which stands for Total Available Market). Here’s how that goes:

# of Potential Customers x Value of Each Customer = TAM

If the TAM = $1,000,000 or more, your Million Dollar Idea (remember good ol’ “A”?) has truly proven its worth. Bingo!

Validation of Your Idea – Take it One Step Further
Give yourself permission to feel pretty great right about now. Go ahead – you’ve worked hard to get this far. Now, let’s just tweak things a wee bit more.

Drive traffic to a simple Landing Page using something like Instapage or Unbounce

Put together some ads & run them on Facebook and/or Google, then evaluate your CR (conversion rate) for collection of email addresses & ad-clicks.

Do a mini-email campaign – Solicit about a dozen friends who would desire your mock product & ask them to send payment via Paypal. If a few actually bite & pay – that’s the best validation. Then either refund them or give them something of even higher worth.

Final Frontier – Give Your Wantrepreneur the Axe
Last step – create your product, build your business & you’re officially on your personal road to riches! Stay focused, upbeat & positive. Stay the course, and if at first you don’t succeed, do try, try again. Persistence is 9/10ths of the battle – go get ‘em!
